Dean Gloria Donnelly, a Philadelphia native, has held several faculty appointments at various colleges and universities including University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, Trenton State College and Villanova University. She was the founding Dean of the School of Nursing at MCP Hahnemann University, appointed in July 1996. A renowned author and scholar, Dr. Donnelly speaks nationally on topics such as nursing education and mental health – focusing on areas including assertiveness, stress and change. Dr. Donnelly sits down with Drexel University Online to answer questions about her own success and experiences as a dean.
-DO: When did you join Drexel University and what lead you to the position of Dean of the College of Nursing & Health Professions?
-GD: I joined Drexel in 1988, when it managed MCP Hahnemann University. When Drexel merged with MCP in 2001, the School of Nursing and the School of Health Professions united and I was appointed as Dean over what became the College of Nursing and Health Professions. So, I am the merger queen!
-DO: What was the catalyst in your decision to put nursing programs online with Drexel Online?
-GD: Our college went online in 1999, so we predated Drexel Online's arrival. However, Drexel Online has provided exquisite marketing so that our programs now have visibility. We went online in 1999 because we knew that it was the future for a high segment of working nurses who needed the convenience that online learning provides.
-DO: What do you feel has been the biggest benefit of having your programs online?
-GD: Online learning creates more active students - you cannot sleep in the back of your computer as you might in a classroom. Online learning forces the teacher to be more organized, plan ahead, and think about the objectives of the course and how the content should be structured to achieve those goals. Online learning heightens the ability of the teacher to evaluate the student’s thinking since every communication, assignment, discussion is archived for review. And, of course, brings students together from many parts of the country, which enriches their learning and broadens their perspectives.
-DO: Do you know of any success stories of students from the College of Nursing & Health Professions who have experienced online learning?
-GD: Yes many. One of our students won the Bayada Award for Innovations in Technology in Nursing Education in which a committee reviews blind submissions. She won $5000 for most creative submission.
-DO: What do you like to do in your free time?
-GD: Time is never free – but I take watercolor lessons so I am a budding artist. I do this to keep the right side of my brain engaged and it does give me a different slant on the world even at work. I am an avid gardener, I especially love raising hydrangeas and daylilies. And, my husband and I are the caregivers for my 97 year-old dad and 95 year-old mother in law who live with us.
-DO: If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be?
-GD: A great chef – Lydia Bastianich. Best to have dinner with those who know most about food.
